Kamau Ptah - Educator, Djembe' Drum Practitioner and Poet.
Biography Educational leader, teacher, traveler, historian, metaphysician, musician, poet, writer and custodian of indigenous wisdom teachings are several terms that have been appropriately assigned to characterize Kamau Ptah (Formerly known as Mark Patterson). Born August 26, 1969 in the Bronx, New York, Kamau Ptah was raised and educated in Westchester County, New York. As a child Kamau excelled in athletics and received many honors and awards as a Track and Basketball competitor. As a student-athlete he developed discipline and leadership attributes, which established the foundational precepts for his success in college and life. Kamau embarked on his quest for higher learning at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. He studied History/Social Science and Secondary Education. Embracing the ancient adage, "Know Thyself", Kamau helped to establish the African Studies Cluster, a student organization that emphasized the learning of African History and culture as vehicles to empower students to achieve academic and personal excellence. It was at this period when Kamau became cognizant of the ancient Rites of Passage system and began to infuse these concepts into his developing educational philosophy and practices. In 1992, Kamau launched his prolific career in education as a Social Studies teacher at his alma mater Woodlands Middle/Senior High School. From there, he embraced a new experience as a Law and Social Studies teacher at Junior High School 43 (The Study Center for Law and Peace) in Harlem, New York. In addition to his rave reviews as a classroom teacher, he contributed to each school's culture by serving as a coach, organization coordinator, committee chairman, and workshop facilitator. It was during this period that Kamau co-founded and served as the Director for the Harambee Rites of Passage Group, Inc., a community based, self-improvement, value-based, cultural and character enrichment program that holistically primes youth for the healthy transition into adulthood. In 1998 Kamau responded to a magnificent opportunity to serve as an Associate Director for Nassau Community College's Center for Excellence and Innovation in Education (CEIE). Through the CEIE, he assisted with the supervision and coordination of the Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) and the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), which are two college preparedness initiatives that provide motivation, readiness, and early post-secondary exposure to middle and high school students from Nassau County, Long Island. During his five years with Nassau's CEIE, he contributed to establishing the philosophy, mission and principles of the organization and implemented innovative components that were aligned with the program's vision. Concomitantly, with his career pursuits Kamau intensified his studies as a Djembe' drummer and poet. Under the leadership of his brilliant instructor Kehinde O'Uhuru and the Djembe' Mau Society of African Ancestral Acknowledgements, Kamau is developing himself as a traditional drummer who conveys the rich legacy and principles of this indigenous sacred art form. He has performed and facilitated various workshops throughout the Tri-State area on the art of drumming and its benefit to building a sound self-identity and community. As a poet, he has read throughout the Metropolitan area at cultural and educational events and café's. In 1998 Kamau won several Poetry Slams, which qualified him to compete in the Hottest Poets National Championship. At this time, Kamau is studying the ancient classical language of Kmt named the Mdu Ntchr under the instruction of Mfundishi Jhutyms Ka N Heru Hassan K. Salim. In 2003, Kamau completed his Master's Degree in School Administration at Cambridge College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is the co-founder and currently serves as the Program Director of the Urban Assembly Academy of History and Citizenship for Young Men (One of the first all boy Public High School's in New York City since the 1960s). It is Kamau's assertion that "successful leaders possess powerful artistic sensibilities." Along with HRU Yuya Assaan, Kamau is committed to cultivating the brilliance that exists within youth of African ancestry. Through the Sunz of Sankofa, he plans to continue to devote his time to cultivate his leadership and artistry through Historical studies, Rite of Passage initiations, poetry and drumming, thus establishing a creative style of educational leadership that will be appropriate for stimulating the cognitive, conative and affective growth of educators and youngsters, hence awakening the sensibilities and intelligences to address the current challenges in educating our future.
The Mission "Embracing the ancient adage of "Know Thyself", my life purpose serves as a catalyst to guiding educators; youth care professionals and young people to the threshold of their destinies. Through holistic pedagogical practices, transformative learning models, character development, culturally relevant methods, indigenous wisdom teachings and artistic expression, I seek to empower today's youth to cultivate their authentic voice, which is the foundation for self-mastery and the gateway to all knowledge."
